~Landscape Trees~
In addition to Christmas tree sales, Schaefer's Tree Farm sells our tree stock for landscape purposes. Transplanting is accomplished by either hand-digging (5' or smaller trees) or with the use of a contracted landscaper's tree spade for the digging and transport of larger trees. Schaefer’s Choose and Harvest Christmas Tree Farm is a family business founded in 1989; when our first trees were planted. Since then, over 30,000 trees have been planted in plots from 5,000 to 7,000 per year on about 30 acres of our 80-acre farm. In addition to our traditional Christmas tree species, there about 65 other species of trees planted on our property. Some of these trees are ornamental or experimental, some are for landscaping sales, while others create buffers to help prevent the spread of disease from tree-to-tree, but most of our trees are simply for reforestation- to grow and enjoy.
We began harvesting trees in 2000. In Southeastern Wisconsin it takes about 10 years for a Christmas tree seedling to grow to a harvesting height of about 6 feet. When you choose and cut your Christmas tree at our farm, not only will you have the freshest tree possible, but you will be helping to thin our forest for the trees that remain in the field for years to come. To maintain and enhance our growing forest, each spring we plant new seedlings in larger spaces to offset some of the harvested stock.
Real Trees are a fantastic eco-friendly green product. While Christmas trees grow they absorb carbon dioxide from the air and soil and produce oxygen. This is a natural process no artificial tree can replicate! Planting evergreen trees around your home helps to shield it from the extreme temperatures of winter and summer. This helps to reduce heating/cooling costs and save energy!
After the holidays, your real Christmas tree is recyclable for use as mulch or as compost, and will naturally return to the soil as a real tree is 100% biodegradable!
~Wildlife~
Our 80-acre farm has the east branch of the Rubicon River flowing through it and a 7-acre flowage. These features coupled with our reforestation provides a haven for many species of animals and and has been visited by almost 200 species of birds. Keep your eye out - you never know what you might see during your tree farm adventure - We have another set of triplets in 2009.... we named Eins, Zwei and Drei!
